Nestled in the heart of Canggu, Villa Mewali is a pair of private villas designed on a long and narrow site. The project began with a clear challenge: how to create two independent villas that still feel spacious, while allowing them to seamlessly transform into one larger retreat when needed.
Working with a limited footprint encouraged us to rethink how the space could feel more open and generous. Instead of concealing the pitched roof with a flat ceiling, we exposed the full volume of the roof and transformed the upper space into a mezzanine lounge, a quiet area for relaxing and slowing down. The staircase leading to the mezzanine was carefully integrated into the architecture, becoming one of the defining character elements of the villa itself.
The material palette was intentionally kept minimal and warm. Light-painted walls create an airy atmosphere, while terrazzo flooring flows throughout the villa to enhance continuity. Teak veneer cabinetry adds warmth and texture, complemented by touches of kawung-patterned cement tiles that subtly introduce a sense of local identity.
The bathrooms were also designed as an extension of the bedrooms, without strong visual boundaries or enclosed separation. This open spatial approach allows the rooms to feel larger, softer, and more connected as a continuous living experience.
