Nestled in the heart of Canggu, Villa Mewali is a pair of private villas designed on a long and narrow site. The project began with a simple challenge: creating two independent villas that still feel spacious while allowing them to seamlessly transform into one larger retreat when needed. The design adopts an inward-looking layout that maximizes natural light, cross ventilation, and spatial clarity, creating spaces that feel open and airy while maintaining a strong sense of privacy.
Working within a limited footprint encouraged us to rethink openness and the perception of space. Rather than concealing the pitched roof with a flat ceiling, we exposed the full roof volume and transformed the upper level into a mezzanine lounge, a space for relaxing and slowing down. The staircase leading to the mezzanine was carefully integrated into the architecture, becoming one of the villa’s defining character elements. The bathrooms were designed as natural extensions of the bedrooms, without strong visual boundaries, allowing the interiors to feel softer, more spacious, and seamlessly connected as one continuous living experience.
